48NOTES TO THE CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTSFOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2012(Expressed in Thousands of Trinidad and Tobago Dollars, except where otherwise stated)(Continued)2. Significant accounting policies (continued)v) Impairment of non-financial assets (continued)The following criteria are also applied in assessing impairment of specific assets:GoodwillGoodwill is tested for impairment annually as at 31 December and when circumstances indicate that the carrying value may be impaired.Impairment is determined for goodwill by assessing the recoverable amount of each cash-generating unit (or group of cash-generating units) to which the goodwill relates. Where the recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit is less than their carrying value an impairment loss is recognized. Impairment losses relating to goodwill cannot be reversed in future periods.Intangible assetsIntangible assets with indefinite useful lives are tested for impairment annually as at 31 December either individually or at the cash generating unit level, as appropriate and when circumstances indicate that the carrying value may be impaired.w) Impairment of financial assetsThe carrying value of all financial assets not carried at fair value through the income statement is reviewed for impairment whenever events or circumstances indicate that the carrying amount may not be recoverable. The identification of impairment and the determination of recoverable amounts is an inherently uncertain process involving various assumptions and factors, including the financial condition of the counterparty, expected future cash flows, observable market prices and expected net selling prices. In relation to trade receivables the carrying amount of the receivable is reduced through use of an allowance account when there is doubt about the collectability of the amounts due under the original terms of the invoice. Impaired debts are derecognized when they are assessed as uncollectible.Guardian_Media_Annual_Report2012.indd 48 4/17/13 7:31 PM
